About this deal

At What Hi-Fi?, we know full well the value of revisions. Yet still, it was quite the surprise when first we heard about one made by Naim, with its second generation of the Mu-so Qb wireless speaker. The previous iterationwas great, earning five stars when it was first reviewed. This version, however, is truly phenomenal. Controllable output - reduced noise pollution. Volume that is 'just right'. No annoying audio 'Hot Spots' Zenker decided to compare different types of speakers to find out if a modern flat panel loudspeaker can fill the acoustic gap. Four categories of loudspeakers represented by a market-leading product were assessed: smart speaker, flat panel, soundbar, and studio monitor. After thorough analysis, he wasn’t surprised to find that, in terms of acoustic parameters, the studio monitor performs best, followed by the soundbar and the flat panel. The smart speakers achieved the lowest scores. The lower frequency limit, comparable frequency response deviation, and an increased acoustic output, led to a higher preference rating of the flat panel loudspeaker compared to the smart speaker.

However, while JBL is very dominant when it comes to Bluetooth speakers, as you'll see with the list above we tend to find wireless speakers from other brands, such as Sonos, Apple or Audio Pro, will serve you best when it comes to buying a wireless speaker. Why is Sonos so popular? Another observation is the non-flat SPL curves with dips and peaks, particularly in the low-frequency range, indicating the presence of panel resonance modes. Optimizing the panel shape and the attachment location of the exciter are crucial in minimizing these effects, although this aspect falls beyond the scope of this article. All wireless speakers are tested and reviewed in the context of their value on a performance-per-dollar basis, and as part of our testing procedure, wireless speakers are compared against similarly-priced class leaders to see how they perform and help us figure out an appropriate rating.Combining the best of our two worlds we make high-quality sound affordable and available – and create products neither of us would be able to come up with on our own. You've never heard a lamp like this before The venerable panel discussion is a staple of business communication. Yet it is often the most misused, misunderstood and maligned tool in the communications arsenal. Pity the poor speaker who signs up to be a part of a panel discussion. They’re often oblivious to the fact that audience expectations are high (we might have even paid admission for this experience) and therefore audience members are usually fairly critical. A panel speaker might as well walk on stage naked – he or she is that vulnerable.

While customers are willing to integrate invisible speakers, they won’t settle for inferior sound quality. It is, therefore, essential to improve the sound quality of flat panel loudspeakers and reach similar acoustical properties to conventional systems. Psychoacoustics research has shown that four parameters are essential for a positive loudspeaker preference rating: low-frequency deviation, the lower and upper frequency limit, the deviation and slope of the frequency response, and a homogeneous directivity pattern. Zenker has researched each parameter to optimise the technology to reach a higher acoustic preference rating. Optimised exciter positioning Most speakers have been trained on how to deliver a keynote to a large group. Yet the majority are far more likely to sit on a panel at a conference or industry event than to give a solo presentation. Zenker, B, (2021) Improved Directivity of Flat-Panel Loudspeakers by Minimizing the Off-Axis Radiation below Coincidence. Appl Sci, 11, 7001. doi.org/10.3390/app11157001 In this window speaker example a single sound transducer powers a window. Delivering a controlled wall of sound over the entire surface area. Being part of a panel discussion is a bit of an art form. There’s a fine balance you must always keep, and that is being part of the group while at the same time standing out as an individual. However, Bluetooth-only speakers are generally more portable (as they don't require an internet connection to work) and often more affordable. Are JBL and Bose good brands? This took some trial and error as you have to resize the cones to the way you like the sound, at first I had them at 100mm outer diameter but this was way too big and gave a pretty tinny so I resized them to about 70mm outer diameter and 30mm high. This improved the sound quality heaps and it's how I kept it for a while and it's how it is in most of the pictures.

Let the primer dry thoroughly and then start sanding the parts with 400 grit sanding paper and some soapy water. This allows passersby to hear the music or promotional message while they walk past the full length of the window. Because my speakers will be infront of a window that gets a lot of sun I decided to print the parts in ABS as PLA painted in a dark color would deform from the heat, they can also be printed in PETG or PLA in a light shade (I have no problems with white PLA prints in full sun). The important thing here is: Look at the panelist when they are talking and look at the audience when is your time to speak, but whatever you do, don't look down or lose sight, and pay attention to your posture and facial expressions. Storytelling is a winner card. You will also need to apply a bead of CA glue around the mounting ring of the exciter, this is where it's important to use a 2 part CA glue as it gives you time to position your panel before drying.

Wireless speakers can come in one-box units (Audio Pro, Naim) or as active stereo speakers with amplification and sources built-in (a complete system, if you will, such as the KEF LSX II). Next you can solder the wire onto your exciters making sure of the polarity on both drivers otherwise your speakers will be out of phase. Distributed Mode Loudspeaker (DML) is a flat panel loudspeaker technology, developed by NXT, in which sound is produced by inducing uniformly distributed vibration modes in the panel through a special electro-acoustic exciter. Distributed mode loudspeakers function differently from most others, which typically produce sound by inducing pistonic motion in the diaphragm. Exciters for distributed mode loudspeakers include, but are not limited to, moving coil and piezoelectric devices, and are placed to correspond to the natural resonant model of the panel. Advantages: Unique flat panel shape can be integrated into walls or other architectural or design elements within a room (often DML speakers are hidden by making them look like the other sound treatment panels in the room) At What Hi-Fi?, we've reviewed many products from both JBL and Bose, and we've liked products from both brands. Though, while Bose speakers are often stylish and have lots of features, sometimes JBL can offer up better value for the money in terms of performance.

Sound is becoming a key part of interior design. It enriches the journey within hospitality environments with beautiful, therapeutic sound. Imagine a room full of warm sounds, suitably selected to cater to your mood, welcoming you. The sound is surrounding you, interacting with you and unwinding you. Isn’t it delightful and magnetising? If you spot a loudspeaker, is the moment still so surprising and magnetising? Benjamin Zenker, from the Technical University of Dresden, and founder of ZEN Audio Engineering, would answer: not at all. Invisible loudspeakers are essential in creating a mindfulness sound experience. Once you spot the loudspeaker, the imagination disappears. Invisible loudspeakers Enter the Era 300, Sonos’ more expensive rival to the HomePod 2 that looks to beat Apple at its own game. With its unique, “cinched hourglass” shape, there’s no question that the Era 300 is a bit more of an acquired taste than most of the brand’s rather more conservative designs, but what isn't up for debate is how superbly the five-star Era 300 manages to perform. In short, it is absolutely excellent.
