I liked how well thought out this was and that it took them a long time to go from enemies to lovers. We meet Shane and Ilya in their current messed up situation and then it jumps back in time to them being teenage rookies and just meeting. Ilya kinda reminded me of my fav heroes: Ivan Lukov (and not only for the Russian heritage), Hua Cheng (TGCF) and Cam (Mine ‘Till Midnight) and I was there for it him. This book is to 90% about the two main characters, and it covers 10 years of their passionate, but also forbidden relationship.

Though the book has lots of sex in it, it's still a romance-first story, even though that romance is slow burn and takes a long time to get there.

It makes it extremely difficult for me to care about the act when I don’t even know the characters; I feel like I start the book being already behind. UPDATE 2022: it's my fifth time reading Shane and Ilya's story and it never gets old - they are by far my most favourite MM couple! I loved how they let each other in for the first time on moments from their shared past they never talked about before.They were so vibrant and I could feel all their emotions: their dislike for one another, their confusion, their laughter, their yearning. But when you only let your characters be together as rivals in the ice and fuck buddies in hotels, it becomes cheap.

Shane often abstained from alcohol because he didn’t want to do anything that might compromise his performance on the ice. To all my friends who have constantly recommended this to me (some of you have even begged), believe me when I say I’m mad that I didn’t like this.It’s absolutely wonderful—sexy, emotional, well-written—and I have no clue what the reviewers who said there was “too much sex” were complaining about. It was heartbreaking to see all how much Ilya had to lose to be able to be with Shane but it know it was worth it. I usually like to close with recommending the book to people, but in lieu of that I will say I like my sleep.

chefs kiss* There was so much character development here, Shane and Ilya felt like different people by the end. I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed the narration by Thor Thom, who brilliantly brought to life the character of Ilya.You don’t absolutely need to read Game Changer before you read Heated Rivalry, but you really should. Sure this was part of the sex talk but in that moment it’s also crystal clear how long it had truly been since they started. It was fun to see how they pushed each other in the rink plus that competitiveness made their attraction even more sexy. But they slowly opened up to each other about their pasts and what was hurting them, and I loved how they ran to be there for each other whenever they needed help.
