About this deal

Halloween (2018) started on an exciting note only to lose its path with Halloween Kills and never recovered with this final chapter. And expanding this into collective grief and paranoia, so rampant in today’s very divided world, felt more organic and a fascinating expansion of the franchise – we’d never really seen Haddonfield as a living, breathing town before and the added thrill of revisiting other characters from the ‘78 original was not just enticing but exciting for most fans. If there’s been one constant with this new trilogy it's each film has scored an excellent 4K transfer, and that trend continues with this 2160p Dolby Vision presentation of Halloween Ends. If ever an opening credits font could serve as a warning shot, the use of the Halloween III: Season of the Witch font was it.

Halloween Ends is the perfect example of movie you weren’t expecting, didn’t know you wanted and then rather enjoy and appreciate what you have in the end.The two titans of horror, Laurie Strode and Michael Myers climb into the ring one last time for the showdown of a lifetime… with Corey. Depth: Depth of field is pretty impressive with good pushback and scale on display throughout the film. Yet despite a handful of well executed thrill kill scenes (the opening baby-sitting accident is the best scene in the entire film and shows that Gordon Green can do when he puts his mind to it), the overarching narrative of Halloween Ends is not just a confusing mess (unlike the previous two films, the link between theme, narrative and character here is muddied from the get go – character motivations baffle, dialogue exchanges seem to about face in their meaning mid-sentence and even the simple story arc of key characters are puzzlingly obtuse) but it annoyingly pivots away from the end of … Kills completely (Myers is now a homeless man who can barely stand, not the mythic, invulnerable embodiment of evil he ended the last film as), almost jettisoning Myers wholly from its storyline, replacing him with a new character with no heritage at all and ultimately robbing the audience of the prime reason for this film to even exist.

With this one, I liked the Cody idea but Laurie’s character seemed wholly at odds with the one that ended Kills (even more so in the extended version) and there was no real explanation as to why she’d spent 40 years preparing in 2018 for him to break out, and then wasn’t apparently bothered after a key murder ended Kills, and the fact that MM was still on the loose. But in terms of delivering what was very clearly promised, on what has been talked up by Green, Curtis et al for years now, the trilogy and this film in particular cannot help but disappoint, even with the weight of those heady expectations removed.Well, on revisiting Halloween Ends now on 4K disc, it’s clear that that initial reaction was not quite true. Gore effects also get plenty of attention with the ghastly kills getting their due complete with oozy crimson blood work. It was quite a bold approach to the final entry in the trilogy and is not what you'd expect it to be. Hair is fine and clearly delineated, while skin pores and fine lines are clear, while clothing has subtle yet obvious differentials in their overall texture. Laurie hat ihre Enkelin Allyson (Andi Matichak) aufgenommen und sich entschlossen, Angst und Wut hinter sich zu lassen und das Leben zu genießen.

Appropriately dreary and cold, the image is impeccably detailed with facial features, clothing, masks, and gore getting all of the care and attention they deserve. I liked the storyline dispite some flaws: and the sudden "accidental" death of the child was a surprise/shock!is frequently in evidence in the numerous lower light moments throughout the film, beginning with the opening sequence.

Four years ago, director David Gordon Green breathed new life into the most iconic horror franchise of all time. With Laurie Strode, the exploration of survival and its lasting impacts, of grief and trauma and even the cinematic conceit of simply seeing what would happen to a ‘final girl’ after the credits have rolled were rich tapestries to be woven, especially with an actress as capable as Jamie Lee Curtis. It’s more cerebral (or at least it thinks it is), and much more character focused than previous entries.
