Berserk is a Japanese manga series written and drawn by Kentaro Miura, and has been published by Hakusensha in the magazines Monthly Animal House (1989–1992) and Young Animal (1992–). As Isidro and Schierke are having a dinner with the mysterious girl, whose name is Isma, they are told the history of herself and the island. He allows Isidro, Farnese and Serpico to follow him out of fear that he will lose control of himself to his dark impulses—embodied as a demonic black dog within his mind—with Farnese becoming Casca's primary caretaker.

Guts, having spent a year training to become a better swordsman, is warned by a mysterious being known as the "Skull Knight" that his actions have instigated an "Eclipse". When Farnese and her knights, led by Joachim, arrive, Casca's brand awakens the dead which possess some pagans to indiscriminately attack people. Enlisting Jerome and Nina's help, Isidro uses a makeshift pulley system to free Casca as she was about to be burned alive. Berserk has continued with the credits appearing as "original work by Kentaro Miura, art by Studio Gaga, supervised by Kouji Mori". After defeating a feared mercenary captain Bazzuso during a castle siege, Guts is attacked by Corcus a captain of the Band of the Hawk.Guts is a Byronic hero who is able to struggle against causality, but seemingly unable to overcome it.
