But while I occasionally found myself wincing as I read The Secret Commonwealth, the book always kept pulling me inexorably forward. The Secret Commonwealth [1] is the second novel in The Book of Dust trilogy and was released on 3 October, 2019.

Still - I can't think of a better recommendation than the fact that I read it cover to cover over three days and often had to force myself to put it down. Exclusive to the paperback edition, Chris Wormell's new original illustrations bring Lyra's world vividly to life. REVIEWS FOR LA BELLE SAUVAGE: THE BOOK OF DUST VOLUME ONE: Fans of His Dark Materials will find themselves joyfully immersed in a familiar world .

And with The Secret Commonwealth, Pullman continues to subvert our expectations at every turn, fulling diving into the stranger, more psychedelic aspects of the world he has wrought.

There's more to her story than you ever imagined and in The Secret Commonwealth Lyra has become an adult. Pullman has received numerous other awards, including the Eleanor Farjeon Award and the Astrid Lindgren Award. As she flees the deadly theocrats, there are plenty of the thrills you might recognise from His Dark Materials, yet this is a long way from that work.

The manipulative ways of the religious and political leadership in the world in the book is simplified and exaggerated but feels disturbingly like our own, as is the flexible nature of "facts" and fake news. As ever, Pullman's story is complex and vast but home to some of the finest storytelling in the 21st century. The Secret Commonwealth takes place twenty years after the events of La Belle Sauvage, and ten years after those in The Amber Spyglass, and we still follow Lyra, older but still headstrong, and still familiar. I first reasd the Dark material series about 18 yeas ago, read them to my then 80muear old mother, who alo love them an they were reccommended to me by a brilinat 1 year odl niece. As a child, she lied happily and with a clear conscience; she was good at it because it never occurred to her not to be, because she didn’t have the imagination to wonder if something might go wrong. The Secret Commonwealth of the title refers to things that are outside the realm of rational thought, such as ghosts, fairies, and superstition. Indeed, Pullman is more tempted to draw parallels with our world’s discontents than he has ever been. He spent part of his childhood in Australia, where he first met the wonders of comics, and grew to love Superman and Batman in particular. From the author of the phenomenal His Dark Materials comes the next chapter in the story of Lyra Silvertongue . It is almost ten years since readers left Lyra and the love of her young life, Will Parry, on a park bench in Oxford's Botanic Gardens at the end of the ground-breaking, bestselling His Dark Materials sequence.
