About this deal

The ideal solution to the aforementioned quality assurance problem lies in the UMF™ (Unique Manuka Factor) grading system. This system offers a more holistic evaluation than just relying on MGO measurement. Genuine Manuka honey from New Zealand bears both a MGO rating and a UMF™ grade. Many of Manuka’s healthful attributes are thought to relate to its major antibacterial component, methylglyoxal (MGO). Even though MGO is found in most types of honey, it’s usually in much smaller quantities. In manuka honey, MGO comes from the conversion of a compound called dihydroxyacetone, which is found in high concentration in manuka flowers. The higher the concentration of MGO, the stronger the antibiotic effect. ‘Researchers have found that manuka honey has a higher antibacterial activity against various strains of bacteria, with a stronger effect coming from manuka honey with higher MGO levels,’ says Wakeman. 3. High in antioxidants Manuka honey is produced when the bee pollinates the Manuka bush, a plant native to New Zealand. Manuka Honey from New Zealand is harvested by bees from the nectar of the indigenous Manuka shrub ( Leptospermum scoparium). It contains Methylglyoxal (MGO) which is a key compound that sets Manuka Honey apart from other honey. However, a widely supported definition of authentic Manuka exists. It was set up by the UMF Honey Association and determines the minimum quantity of naturally occurring chemicals only found in the nectar of the Manuka flowers that must be present in the honey to be authenticated as Manuka. The MGO rating system was pioneered by Manuka Health after the company discovered it was one of the key naturally occurring compounds that make manuka honey special.

For one trial, a special chewable Manuka honey was developed and the participants chewed on this 3 times a day for 10 minutes. After 21 days it was found that there was a reduction in tooth plaque and cases of bleeding gums were reduced by half 11. Independently verified and scientifically tested to ensure the MGO rating, this is all natural Monofloral Manuka honey from the foothills of Mt Egmont, Taranaki. You might also be familiar with the NPA rating which relates to the amount of Non-Peroxide Activity there is within the Manuka honey. NPA is a measurement of MGO and below are the equivalents: Sometimes you may see the term MGO used in place of UMF. The MGO rating also indicates the amount of Methylglyoxal in the honey. Therefore, the higher the MGO rating, then the more antibacterial properties are in the honey. An MGO rating of 100+ is the equivalent to UMF 5+ and MGO 550+ is the same as UMF 15+. Manuka Honey Uses and Health Benefits

Manuka Honey – Precautions

In addition to fighting biofilms, MGO in Manuka honey has demonstrated potential in restricting the growth of dangerous pathogens. It’s proven effective against Streptococcus pyogenes, gram-negative bacteria including E. coli, and even hard-to-treat methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Manuka honey has long been used as a treatment and protective barrier for burns, sores, and other wounds, thanks to its antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Topical application has been shown to enhance the regeneration of tissue, reduce healing time, and even decrease pain in multiple studies. ‘Manuka honey has the ability to stimulate macrophages which are needed for reducing microbial infections and helping in tissue healing,’ says Wakeman. It may even help reverse resistance to antibiotics in bacteria such as MRSA, the Society for General Microbiology found. 5. Promotes oral health One common factor in these gastric problems is the Clostridium difficile ( C. diff), bacteria. However, an interesting study published in 2013 showed that Manuka honey is effective at treating infections caused by C. diff bacteria 9. 7. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

MGO in Mānuka honey is naturally made in the hive from DHA which is present in the nectar of the Manuka Bush. Within the hive DHA undergoes the Maillard reaction to naturally form MGO. On the subject of plastic, we as a business we have considered switching to glass for our Manuka Honey for some years.

The manuka tree has been known for centuries to have special properties and has long been used in traditional medicine, so perhaps it is no surprise that the honey that is produced from the nectar of the tree should equally have unusual properties.

MGO 250+ Manuka Honey is a natural and delicious honey that captures the essence and taste of the natural environment in New Zealand. Finally, if you’re looking for the ultimate punch against bacteria and other pathogens, we suggest MGO 829+. This honey has superior levels of both antibacterial activity and medicinal properties. MGO 850+, MGO 900+, and MGO 950+ are among the most common grades in this range. MGO, Antibacterial Properties, and the Growing Concern of Antibiotic Resistance Pure New Zealand Mānuka Honey has a unique taste that changes as the MGO rating increases. It isn't as sweet as most mass produced honey varieties so to help you decide on the taste and antimicrobial properties (MGO rating) that's perfect for you we've created this handy taste chart. Clinical trials have also shown that Manuka honey has a positive effect in the treatment of various cancer tumors. The honey was effective in inhibiting the growth of cancer cells and also proved to increase the effectiveness of conventional cancer treatments 12. 10. Manuka honey for shinglesThis was discovered by Manuka Health and a research team in Germany to be the special compound that needs to present for a honey to be classed as genuine manuka honey.

It’s important to note that the MGO content of Manuka honey changes over time. The MGO concentration initially increases rapidly during the first couple of years after harvest due to the chemical conversion of DHA to MGO. However, as the DHA supply gets used up, the rate of conversion declines. In fact, in honey nearing the end of a five-year shelf life, the MGO concentration begins to drop due to insufficient DHA availability. Cancer Quality assurance is paramount when it comes to Manuka honey — an aspect that can’t solely rely on MGO measurement. Unfortunately, MGO can be produced industrially and added to honey. This practice gives birth to ‘fake’ Manuka honey, which can be misleading for consumers. Therefore, measuring only MGO doesn’t guarantee the authenticity and quality of Manuka honey. MGO Concentration Over Time and Storage Conditions The MRSA bug highlights one problem facing the medical community; bacteria are becoming more and more resistant to antibiotics. Professor Cooper from the University of Wales carried out research on how Manuka honey interacts with bacteria. She found that Manuka honey can actually help antibiotics be more effective and even reverse antibiotic resistence 5. 3. Manuka honey for strep throat Consumers who buy MGO 250+ Manuka Honey are guaranteed that they are buying a genuine manuka honey. The rating MGO 250+ is considered to be moderately high rating, but the range of manuka honey produced by Manuka Health has honey with a level as low as 30+ and as high as 550+.Because of Manuka honey’s powerful antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, it is excellent as a topical treatment for damaged skin and is one of the recommended treatments for minor burns. Given the high price tag associated with this sweet, rich liquid, which purported manuka honey benefits live up to the hype? With the expertise of Mike Wakeman, clinical nutritionist at Feel Alive, we take a look what the science so far can tell us about manuka honey benefits – and explain what to look for on the label: As there are no UK guidelines to classify Manuka honey grades, we recognise that it can be difficult to shop products and compare them to understand with Manuka honey which strength you should buy. In addition, MGO acts differently in honey than in isolation, with other elements present in the honey that alter how this chemical interacts with bacteria. This highlights that MGO is only a part of the picture and not the sole contributor behind the significant non-peroxide antibacterial activity of Manuka honey. Ensuring Authenticity and Quality: MGO is Not the Only Factor Genuine New Zealand Mānuka Honey. Independently tested to show it meets the New Zealand Government's definition of Mānuka honey.
